      <abstract>
        <p>Despite considerable progress in recent years, several fundamental questions about harmonic maps remain open. In contrast to earlier studies, our approach accounts for heterogeneity and avoids the usual simplifying assumptions. We prove an optimal convergence rate for the proposed scheme. Together, these results contribute to a more complete picture and open the way to further applications.</p>

<title>Introduction</title>
<p>Let <inline-formula><tex-math id="M1">$\Omega \subset \mathbb{R}^d$</tex-math></inline-formula> be a bounded domain with Lipschitz boundary and let <inline-formula><tex-math id="M2">$p \in (1,\infty)$</tex-math></inline-formula>. We consider the boundary value problem<xref ref-type="fn" rid="FN1">1</xref></p>
<disp-formula id="E1"><label>(1)</label><tex-math id="M3">\begin{aligned} -\operatorname{div}\left(|\nabla u|^{p-2}\nabla u\right) &amp;= f \quad \text{in } \Omega,\\ u &amp;= 0 \quad \text{on } \partial\Omega. \end{aligned}</tex-math></disp-formula>
<p>Existence of weak solutions in <inline-formula><tex-math id="M4">$W_0^{1,p}(\Omega)$</tex-math></inline-formula> follows from the direct method of the calculus of variations. Our interest here is in sharp quantitative bounds that do not depend on the dimension.</p>
<title>Main result</title>
<p>Theorem 1. Suppose <inline-formula><tex-math id="M5">$f \in L^{q}(\Omega)$</tex-math></inline-formula> with <inline-formula><tex-math id="M6">$q &gt; d/p$</tex-math></inline-formula>. Then there is a constant <inline-formula><tex-math id="M7">$C = C(d,p,q)$</tex-math></inline-formula> such that</p>
<disp-formula id="E2"><label>(2)</label><tex-math id="M8">\|u\|_{L^\infty(\Omega)} \le C\,|\Omega|^{\frac{1}{d}-\frac{1}{p}+\frac{1}{q}}\,\|f\|_{L^q(\Omega)}^{\frac{1}{p-1}}.</tex-math></disp-formula>
<p>The proof combines a truncation argument with the Sobolev inequality <inline-formula><tex-math id="M9">$\|v\|_{p^*} \le S\|\nabla v\|_p$</tex-math></inline-formula>. A second estimate, for the gradient, is given by</p>
<disp-formula id="E3"><label>(3)</label><tex-math id="M10">\int_\Omega |\nabla u|^p\,dx ;\le; \sum_{k=1}^{\infty} 2^{-k}\,\lambda_k^{-1}\,\|f\|_{q}^{p'}, \qquad p' = \tfrac{p}{p-1}.</tex-math></disp-formula>
<title>Numerical illustration</title>
<p>Table 1 reports computed values of the constant in (2) for several choices of the parameters, and Fig. 1 shows the decay of the error under mesh refinement.</p>

<title>Discussion</title><p>The bound (2) is sharp up to the value of the constant, as the radial example <inline-formula><tex-math id="M12">$u(x) = (1-|x|^{p/(p-1)})_+$</tex-math></inline-formula> shows. Extensions to systems and to variable exponents will be treated elsewhere.</p>
